With the 2024 U.S. Barefoot Waterski Championships coming in August we are going to share a few facts about town. Helena, Montana is pronounced Hell-en-a and was established in 1864. It was created because of a gold rush. At one point Helena had the most Millionaires per capita in the USA. The Four Georgians are often mentioned as the first to find the gold.
The population of Helena is approximately 32,000 and within 30 miles the populations is about 100,000. The site hosting the 2024 US Barefoot Water Ski Nationals is just outside the City of Helena by 2 miles.
Helena is the Capital of the state of Montana and its economy is fueled by state and federal government, health care and Fort Harrison (VA and reserves). Outside of the government, town has employers such as Boeing, Sofi, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana.
The Missouri River runs just East of Helena, after the source starts at Three Forks, Montana. The Three Forks of the Missouri River consist of the Madison River, the Jefferson River, and the Gallatin River. Most people recognize the two presidents of Madison and Jefferson; but how many know Gallatin was the first Secretary of the Treasury.
The Missouri River is noted for first class fly fishing. What is there to do in Helena? Stay tuned for the next article.
